Grade 10 can be a wonderful and exciting year for young students but, it can also be confusing and stressful! (example: the many many many exams)Students are faced with new personal and academic challenges that will eventually help to mold their future scholastic choices.

Grade 10 students this semester also focused heavily on the theme of conflict, which was seen in both our literature and politics classes. This overall theme influenced both the literature teacher Emily and politics teacher Lara to create the grade 10 competition. The competition allowed for students to showcase their critical and creative skills by presenting an original piece of work in any format about the theme of conflict.

Student Agatha won first place with her beautiful poem about an internal conflict that intricately showed elements of light and elements of darkness.

When asked about her thought process while writing her winning poem this was her response:

I considered the mirror to be the theme of the poem and that, the hero and the devil were characters that represent two different choices. The former means the positive side of humanity, the latter means the negative side, and the mirror represents the social problems or for the reader’s interpretation. For instance, when there is bullying, we must decided whether we will be the hero and help or a devil and not.

In my poem, the hero exclaims, ‘to make good choices’, but, the poem’s protagonist remains a devil. In the end, I decided to write this poem because I wanted to tell people the truth that the reason that sometimes people choose to be a devil is because they want to protect themselves and to not suffer. Every hero or devil is not exact.

  戴芊通过对Walt Whitman的O Me! O Life!

Student Frederic won 2nd place with her own hilarious version of Walt Whitman's O Me! O Life!

When asked "what was your inspiration?", This was her response:

所以在Walt Whitman的Oh me! Oh life!

After reading the poems of Walt Whitman, I feel that writing poem is an expression of the attitude to life. It could be positive or negative, because the attitude and understanding to life is different from person to person. Through Walt Whitman's poems , I can sense the freedom and the happiness of expressing feelings of writing poems. So I write about a poem based on Walt Whitman's Oh me! Oh life to express the feelings and expectations of TOEFL.

  PS: Frederic’s Poem

  Oh Me! Oh Life!

  Oh me! Oh life!

Many questions recurring in my mind,

Of the willing of getting high grades,

The pressure leading me into a phase—craze, industrious.

I thought, I am full of the energy.

  But.

  Oh me! Oh life!

Of the desire of learning, pushing me into

  Another phase, crazy.

  I thought I, the foolish.

  Oh me! Oh life!

TOEFL hurt my little, tiny heart---- gradually. Everyday and every night.

The question: Oh me! So sad, recurring --- how can I do?

  Oh me! Oh life!

  That’s me! That’s life.

To make the event more interesting, the competition organizers invited two students to be guest judges! Below is their reflection on getting to be judges instead of particpants:

It is a special and interesting experience to be as student judges, and we are glad to see the achievement our classmates and peers made. In addition, we also learned from this experience about what we can progress in the future.—— Sonia and Icy
